Poor Pick-up Lines & Choosing an Attorney | Salt Lake City Criminal Defense Attorney Tip of the Week

Hiring an attorney isn’t always the easiest task, but it’s essential if you are facing criminal charges. If you need a defense attorney, you’ve come to the right place. Here is everything you should and shouldn’t do when looking for an attorney.

What Doesn’t Work

Choosing a defense attorney shouldn’t be a long and painful process, but it also shouldn’t be decided lightly. Here are a few things you should avoid when looking for an attorney.

  • Hiring Someone Solely Because They Look Good in a Suit: You might feel more confident with a stylish defender, but remember, they’re representing your case in court. A good suit doesn’t always make them a good lawyer or the right fit for your case.
  • Using a Lawyer Because They Were the First Result on Google After Searching “Cheapest Lawyer”: While budgets must be considered, the price often hints at the quality. Your situation is worth more than going with the cheapest option.
  • Going with the Lawyer Who Uses a Cartoon Character for Their Logo: A cartoon dog in a judge’s wig is cute but may not be confidence-inspiring. If their slogan is “We Woof the Competition!” or they call their firm “Paw & Order,” they might not be your best bet.

What Works

When looking for a defense attorney, you want someone who demonstrates expertise and experience. Here are three things you should do when looking for an attorney:

  • Research Their Experience and Reputation: Researching your options is always good. Look up their backgrounds, years of experience, and client reviews. Consider their success rates with cases similar to yours.
  • Schedule a Consultation: Many attorneys offer free or low-cost initial consultations. Use this meeting to discuss your case, ask questions, and understand whether the attorney is a good fit. Make sure they take time to understand your situation. Ask them how they plan to handle your case. A good attorney will provide a clear strategy, potential outcomes, and possible hurdles, giving you realistic expectations rather than guarantees.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn’t feel right during the initial meetings, listen to your gut. Hiring an attorney is a big decision, and it’s essential to work with someone you trust and feel confident about
